Reading rules · Zhu Xi
  1. No moving lines: read the primary hexagram’s judgment.
  2. One moving line: read its text in the primary hexagram.
  3. Two moving lines: read both in the primary hexagram, giving priority to the upper line.
  4. Three moving lines: read both judgments. In the Tongshi diagram order, the primary judgment takes priority when the bottom line moves; otherwise the changed judgment does (the first and last ten combinations).
  5. Four moving lines: read the two unchanged positions in the changed hexagram, giving priority to the lower line.
  6. Five moving lines: read the sole unchanged position in the changed hexagram.
  7. Six moving lines: use Qian’s Use Nine or Kun’s Use Six; for other hexagrams read the changed judgment.
